Le Mas d'Arjac

A hidden retreat in the heart of South West France

Welcome

Nestled in a fold of woodland and bathed in the soft light of South-West France, Le Mas d’Arjac feels like a world apart. Here, the hush of nature is broken only by birdsong and the rustle of leaves, yet beyond the gates lies a region alive with colour, history, and discovery.

At the crossroads of three distinctive départements, the Aveyron, Tarn et Garonne and the Lot, Arjac is surrounded by some of France’s most enchanting treasures. Within an hour you can wander the cobbled streets of Cordes-sur-Ciel, one of the most beautiful villages in France, stand in awe before the red-brick splendour of Albi’s cathedral, or lose yourself in the medieval lanes of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie or Saint Antonin Noble Val. The pilgrims’ haven of Conques, the dramatic Gorges de l’Aveyron, and the vineyards of Gaillac, where sunlit vines roll towards the horizon, are all close at hand. Closer still, the lively bastide town of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, with its bustling Thursday market, brings the flavours and traditions of the region to your basket.

Yet many guests never feel the need to roam far. With its shaded terraces, shimmering pool, and three beautifully restored stone houses, Le Mas d’Arjac is a place made for lingering. There is space for up to 15 guests, spread across generous bedrooms and two fully equipped kitchens, with a large covered dining terrace that draws everyone together as the sun dips behind the trees. Days unfold at an unhurried pace: mornings with fresh bread and coffee, afternoons drifting between the pool and a hammock, evenings filled with laughter, wine, and the scent of barbecues under the stars.

Easily reached from Rodez or Toulouse, and within a day’s drive of Calais, Arjac offers more than just a holiday, it offers the rare luxury of time and space. Whether you come to explore or simply to breathe, you’ll take away not just memories, but a taste of la France profonde at its most authentic and unforgettable.

Most of the stone buildings at Le Mas d’Arjac date from the early 18th century. The keystone of the Long House is inscribed 1738, though the hamlet itself is thought to be older. For centuries the houses remained largely untouched until their recent sympathetic restoration by local artisans, who used only traditional methods and natural materials. The result is a place where the authentic character of the original buildings has been preserved – exposed beams, thick stone walls, and timeless proportions – yet enhanced with discreet modern comforts. Solid oak floors, terracotta tiles, underfloor heating, and effective insulation ensure that the houses are as welcoming in winter as they are cool in summer.

The Area and Things to Do

Arjac lies at the heart of a true walker’s paradise, with a network of varied trails passing directly by the hamlet. The surrounding landscape of rolling, wooded hills is perfect for gentle rambles, invigorating hikes, or leisurely cycling tours.

A little further afield, the three neighbouring départements open up an even wider choice of outdoor adventures. Guests can enjoy cycling, horse riding, parascending, rock-climbing, via ferrata, go-karting, canoeing and kayaking. Among the highlights, the Gorges de l’Aveyron offer a spectacular kayak descent from Saint Antonin Noble Val – an experience that has become a firm summer favourite with our visitors.

We are always happy to help organise and reserve activities for you.

Cultural Events

As well as providing excellent holiday accommodation, the Mas d’Arjac also fulfills a role as an Arts Centre, where diverse activities take place mainly in its wonderful concert hall/rehearsal space (which does not form a part of the usual accommodation rental agreements).
